As a popular saying goes: “If you want to make everyone happy, don’t be a leader—sell ice cream.” This sentiment, often attributed to business leaders like Steve Jobs, underscores the challenging nature of leadership. Imagine having to choose between helping another team succeed and potentially hindering your current team. Leaders often face opportunities to have a higher impact within an organization. I once had to leave a successful team to assist another team struggling with a high priority project. Despite my attachment to my current team members, I made the tough leadership decision to move because I believed in the greater organizational benefit. This decision proved successful, highlighting that sometimes, leadership means putting your feelings aside for the greater good.
The Courage to Stand Alone
Legendary leaders like Abraham Lincoln and modern pioneers such as Steve Jobs faced intense scrutiny and opposition. As leaders, we need to treat our team members with respect and empathy.
Synergy of Brutal Facts and Unwavering Faith
In my career, I have experienced multiple mass layoffs, team changes, and shifts in priorities that tend to make any leader shake. As a leader, you always have plans for the future with the current team members and the pipeline at hand. But change is inevitable in a fast-paced environment. Therefore, we have to be ready to be tough and optimistic about the changes leaders above you tend to make. You have a vision, and they have theirs, and you have to find a way to make both of them work together. Always understand that as a leader, you will face the brutal facts of life, especially if you have a multitude of people’s careers in your hands. But even so, with every decision you make, you have to have faith that it is the right decision. In doing so, you start to believe in yourself and earn the respect needed to be a leader.
Every decision you make will not be right, but do not fret. Continue on, and roll with the punches until you find the best way to defend against the chaos and learn to read between the lines. As a leader, you have to be ready to read what’s coming and make the changes necessary to lower the blow against not just the people that report to you, or the leaders you report to, but also your heart.
